Young Voices Take the Stage at McAuliffe’s Black History Month Assembly

Students across McAuliffe Elementary came together on Wednesday, February 4, for a powerful and inspiring Black History Month assembly honoring the achievements, leadership and cultural contributions of Black Americans throughout history. The event featured student presenters who shared reflections on influential historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Katherine Johnson, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Their presentations highlighted the lasting impact these trailblazers have had on civil rights, science, government and American society.

Musical performances added to the celebration. Students from Kindergarten through 2nd grade performed This Little Light of Mine, filling the room with energy and optimism. Students from 3rd through 5th grade followed with a moving rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, often referred to as the Black national anthem.

As a powerful conclusion to the assembly, the entire school community joined hands and sang We Shall Overcome, creating a memorable moment of unity and reflection for students and staff alike.

During the program, Adanna Abakporo, Lake Washington School District’s Youth Program Development Facilitator, encouraged students to learn about historical figures who shaped Black history and challenged them to consider what they can do to uplift others in their communities.

McAuliffe Elementary is proud to celebrate Black History Month and to provide opportunities for students to learn, reflect and honor the individuals whose stories continue to shape our nation.
